In a provocative column called "Headless in Baghdad: Nick Berg, The Accidental Terrorist," political-economic analyst Al Martin deconstructs the Curious Case of Nicholas Berg and the notorious video of his alleged murder in Iraq.
"Nick Berg was the son of a prominent Jewish liberal family in a wealthy suburb in northern Pennsylvania called West Chester," writes Martin. "Although the son of left-wingers, Berg was not particularly left wing himself. Although he was liberal and naive, he was a
wanna-be, a big kid physically, who liked the crew cuts and wearing military garb. He liked the whole military thing; and even though he was not qualified to join the military, he was desperate to get to Iraq, to be ‘in theater,’ as he apparently put it to some of his old college chums. He wanted to be ‘in theater.’
"He was even using the military lingo, and of course, he knew the kind of money that people with computer and technical skills were making over there.
