It was the family Brodie's castle. Father Brodie was a very strict man, and he was the big boss in and around the house. He also had a really good reputation in the village where they lived. He was called James Brodie.

He was very mad at his daughter Mary because she wasn't the best of her class anymore after six weeks. His other daughter, Mary, had fallen in love with a boy, but father didn't like the boy, who was called Denis, and thus he had forbidden her to see him. He also had a son called Mathew, who was going to sail to India because his father wanted to make his boy become a man.

He would be away from home for five years, what his girlfriend, called Agnes, did't like. Father Brodie had a small shop, in which he sold hats, where Mary had to work.

Salesman Perry said she was looking ill, and told her to see a doctor. The doctor said she was pregnant, and she asked Denis to marry her, because the baby would be born in 5 months time.
Denis went for a talk with father James Brodie, to ask why Mary isn't allowed to see him.
Then James Brodie is cursing at Denis and he wants to hit him, but Denis avoided him, so James hit the wall very hard, and had to see a doctor.
Mary wasn't allowed to leave the house now, so she couldn't see Denis. After six weeks of sitting at home , she wanted to kill herself, because she thought Denis had forgotten all about her, but then she got a letter from Denis. He wrote that he had bought a cottage. And that he will take her to his cottage for new new years eve.
